So following from our first post below about our new photo studio in Turks and Caicos….thanks to a seemingly karmic series of events we were now looking at building our own studio on our newly acquired piece of land.
That was great, but the opportunity to be on our own gave us another even bigger goal.
Over the spring and summer of 2008 we had seen oil prices shoot through the roof and with it our power bills go ballistic. We are talking over $1500 for a month’s worth of electricity for a 1,000 sq ft office. The peak was actually $1700…
Now we were considering building a space around 3,500 sq ft – enough for 15 people….even my mental maths could figure that we could very easily be facing over $50,000 a year in utility bills…OUCH
Being from the UK and visiting several times in 2007/08 I was struck by how active the “green” movement was – it was everywhere – recycling everything, green TV programmes seemd to domniate the airwaves. All magazines had in them wer artciles on being “organic” or going “green. In comparison it was rare to see any mention of anyhting green on the main US networks in early 2008 and in TCI – nothing is recyled and there is no alternative green power seemingly.
Faced with $50,000 utility bills again fate poked me in the head again and I came across an ad for the “Greenbuild 2008” expo on Boston in Nov 2008…. It was expensive – I was late booking it and ALL the hotels in boston were booked – literally – I could find maybe ten rooms anywhere….it was COLD (Boston in nov was minus somthing or other…yuck)….anyway I rolled the dice and went for it…nothing ventured, nothing gained…
It was awesome, yes it was cold, but within the first six hours I was sure that going “green” was the right thing to do. I went to seminars, talked with vendors on the show floor, looked at products, and took as many brochures and business cards as I could carry… I knew just enought to be dangerous….but I had the cards of people who had been there and done that !!
So not only are we bulding a new studio we are also going to make it the greenest building in the Turks & Caicos Islands.
More soon
