Finishing touches starting to go in…

Work continues on fitting out the interior of the building – and also on the landscaping outside… When I went to the site this morning, the guys were starting to install the light fittings, and also finishing off the steps on the front porch. And we now have palm trees around the parking lot, and cacti! Individually these are all small things, but they each take us closer to being able to move in…  Read More →

A month to go? WOW – Turks and Caicos first greenbuild almost done?

Well its now mid-November and it feels like just yesterday that I was watching the bulldozer make the first cut into the bush to start the building process. Now the building is essentially finished and we are in that “home stretch” with everyone pulling to have things finished by Dec 20th 2009. All that is left to do are lights, the stairs and the exterior areas.  Read More →

Interviewed today by Turks and Caicos TV WIV – on air tonight!

Well I didn’t know this morning that I was going to be on TV, but  a quick call from WIV and I was standing in front of our new studio at noon, in the bright sunshine giving a quick interview on our greenbuild building for this evening’s news!! It was at least 110F in the sun, but luckily it didn’t take long and the questions were more “desert island disks” than “question time” so I hope no “gaffs”!!  Read More →

Tuvalu and Maldives going green…

I was reading the BBC news website this morning when I came across this news item… it seems that the Pacific island nation of Tuvalu is working on meeting all its energy needs from renewable resources by the year 2020. And the Maldives, another low-lying island nation in the Indian Ocean, also announced earlier this year that it is seeking a similar goal. Of course the money has to be found to make these kind of radical changes, but in the long run I’m sure these nations (who like Turks & Caicos rely heavily on tourism) will benefit both environmentally and in economic terms.  Read More →

How to get noticed…

The site’s beginning to look like a “proper” construction site now – fencing going up along the roadside boundary, hard hat warning signs, and most importantly a big new banner announcing to passers-by what we’re up to…  Read More →

Our project featured in “Times of the Islands”

If you live in Turks & Caicos (or are visiting), you may want to pick up a copy of “Times of the Islands“, our local news and general interest magazine. The Summer 2009 edition has an article by editor Kathy Borsuk all about our “green building” project.  Read More →

Blocking the traffic

Slight chaos on Leeward Highway this morning as I was driving to work… It was time for the large mobile excavator to leave the site this morning, having been busy for the past week moving tons of rock, levelling the site and digging a BIG hole for the water cistern. Now that the “heavy lifting” is done, the construction team will be able to start laying out the foundations of the building.  Read More →

Breaking ground next week? Cannot come soon enough!

Well to update everyone – things are still with the planning department – apparently we are waiting on just one final signature….. Having just received our monthly power bill from the local utility (PPC) for our current 1,000 sq ft office space of $957  – for the month!!!!  – the new green building with its energy savings and I hope green power is simply common sense!! At 3,500 sq ft and with potentially 15 people inside we could easily be paying over $25,000 a year for electricity alone… So we’ll keep you informed !! Fingers crossed!!  Read More →
